What is Kirtan and Laavan at a Sikh wedding?

Kirtan and Laavan are two important components of a Sikh wedding ceremony known as Anand Karaj.

Kirtan: Kirtan refers to the devotional singing of hymns and prayers from the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy scripture. It is a central aspect of Sikh worship and spiritual practice. During a Sikh wedding ceremony, Kirtan is performed by a trained Sikh musician or a group of musicians, known as Ragis or Kirtanis.
The Kirtan performed during a Sikh wedding consists of hymns and shabads (verses) from the Guru Granth Sahib that celebrate the divine union of two souls in marriage. The Kirtan sets a devotional and uplifting atmosphere, and it invites the Sangat (congregation) to engage in singing, listening, and meditating on the divine teachings.

Laavan: Laavan refers to the four hymns or verses that are recited during the Anand Karaj, the Sikh wedding ceremony. These hymns are composed by Guru Ram Das Ji, the fourth Sikh Guru, and are found in the Guru Granth Sahib. The Laavan symbolize the stages of a soul’s spiritual union with the divine and are considered sacred and profound. Each Laav is recited as the couple walks around the Guru Granth Sahib together in a clockwise direction. The Laavan highlight the importance of love, trust, commitment, and spiritual growth in the marital relationship.

As each of the 4 Laavans are recited, the couple takes a step with each verse, signifying their progression towards a harmonious and spiritual union. The Laavan emphasize the ideals of equality, shared spiritual journey, and the recognition of the divine presence in the union of husband and wife.

Kirtan and Laavan play significant roles in a Sikh wedding ceremony, as they facilitate a spiritual and sacred environment. They provide a framework for the couple to invoke the divine blessings and guidance for their marital life, while also inspiring the congregation to reflect on the teachings of Sikhism and the significance of marriage as a union of souls.
