What is Lavan Pheras?

Lavan Pheras, also known as Anand Karaj Pheras or Circumambulation of Laavan, are a significant ritual within the Sikh wedding ceremony, known as Anand Karaj. Lavan Pheras involve the couple walking around the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy scripture, while the Laavan (marriage hymns) are being recited.

Here’s a description of the Lavan Pheras:

Number of Rounds: The couple takes a total of four rounds or circuits around the Guru Granth Sahib. Each round corresponds to the recitation of one Laav (marriage hymn).

Direction and Order: The couple walks in a clockwise direction around the Guru Granth Sahib. The bride generally leads the first three rounds, with the groom following her. In the fourth and final round, the groom takes the lead, symbolizing the completion of the spiritual journey and their shared commitment.

Symbolism: The Lavan Pheras symbolize the spiritual journey of the couple as they progress through the stages of their union. Each round represents a specific stage and spiritual realization described in the Laavan.

Spiritual Union: As the couple walks together around the Guru Granth Sahib, they symbolize their commitment to embark on a shared spiritual journey, supporting and guiding each other in their pursuit of spiritual growth and divine union.

Divine Presence: The Guru Granth Sahib is considered the eternal Guru and the spiritual guide. By circling around it, the couple acknowledges the divine presence and seeks blessings for their marital life.

Shared Commitment: The Lavan Pheras emphasize the importance of equality, mutual understanding, and commitment in the marital relationship. Each round signifies a step closer to spiritual union and a deeper connection between the couple.

Throughout the Lavan Pheras, the Laavan, composed by Guru Ram Das Ji, are recited. The Laavan describe the spiritual and emotional stages of a married couple’s journey, emphasizing love, trust, harmony, and the recognition of the divine presence within the union.

Lavan Pheras hold deep significance in Sikh weddings as they represent the couple’s spiritual union and their commitment to walk together on the path of righteousness and love.
